The Hand of Merlin isn’t about Merlin’s severed, re-animated hand, unfortunately, but this roguelite RPG still intrigued us.
The premise is that, while Merlin didn’t have to cut his hand off with a chainsaw, he’s an interdimensional being, the only thing standing between our dimension and a horde of invading alien slimy things. That’s where you come in.
As you take charge of a gang of up to three heroes, you must roam the medieval world, killing many sci-fi/horror-esque monsters along the way, making sure the dimension-breaking beasts stay at home, and the Earth isn’t torn apart. . No pressure.
The good news is that, since Merlin’s hand With turn based combat, you have a chance to think before some alien horror tries to eat your face. And since it’s been in Steam Early Access since May of last year, hopefully developers Room-C Games and Croteam have had a chance to really hone the game. And yes, Croteam are the people behind Serious Sam. And two of Room-C’s developers were working on Serious Sam 4.
But back to The Hand of Merlin. It’s not always “your” Earth trying to save you: There are some multiverse hopping shenanigans going on here. Failed a run and it’s not just a reboot, but from your perspective that’s what’s going on. You jump to another earth – successful runs save that earth, failed runs doom it forever. As we said, no pressure.
It is especially the last premise that we pay attention to. We’re especially curious if the game puts you to the test to sow the demise of so many worlds. It also raises the question of whether “success” in the world of The Hand of Merlin actually matters.
The Hand of Merlin comes to PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series S/X, and Xbox One on June 14. Watch the trailer below.
